Abendlied - Evening Song

Recently my husband and I spent a nice long weekend in historic Fredericksburg, Texas. We met with three other couples, lifetime friends, in a beautiful home called Abendlied. Abendlied is German for 'evening song'. We raised our children together, ministered in church together, but eventually moved to other situations. My daughter Emily and her husband Jeff came over from nearby Brownwood to join in the fun.

There was lots of talking, laughing, eating, and a little shopping. We visited Old Tunnel State Park and experienced "3 million Mexican free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasilienses mexicana) and 3,000 cave myotis (Myotis velifer) bats" ( emerge from an abandoned railroad tunnel.

We enjoyed a show at the Rockbox, famous for its tribute shows. It was a sort of  Patsy Cline play that night. The show was humorous, and the girl could really sing.

My favorite part of the whole weekend was the early morning coffee on the front porch. One by one we found our way to a rocker, bench, or landing with a hot cuppa, and shared our hearts. The subjects ran from children, grandchildren, politics, aging, and just general catching up. It's marvelous to see how God is working in the life of my friends.

We all expressed the desire to "end well" in our continued life journey. I'm so proud of all my sweet friends and thank God for them. It's a comfort to know that as we approach our "evening song" of life, we will be there for each other.
